Workshop Baby-Led Weaning

Baby Led Weaning comes across a UK Maternal Health Nurse, Gill Rapley, and consists of a food introduction through solid foods.

This way of introducing supplementary feeding in the baby is increasingly sought by the parents, as an alternative to the conventional method of potatoes and soups, where everything is passed and given by the adult through a spoon.

In BLW the baby actively participates in its feeding. It is included in the family meal, deciding what to eat and when. It is he alone who will take the food to his mouth and experience it. To taste, to feel its texture with the mouth and the hands.

When adopted by the family, this method becomes a way of life. Including the baby in the meals, involves rethinking the family’s diet, making it healthy and varied. It involves respecting the baby in his needs, giving him time and space to adapt and appreciate something that for him, is totally new.

For many parents and even health professionals, and compared to the traditional method we have become accustomed to, there are several issues that arise:
How will I know if the baby has eaten?
And how do you eat without teeth?
What if he chokes?

We now know from the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines that milk should be the main meal for all infants up to the first year of life, and that from six months on, the introduction of food should be a complement .

In this way, feeding must be just that – a complement – that must be born in the child’s life allied to family moments of pleasure, discovery and respect.
